London’s iconic hotel scene is vibrant, varied and luxurious.

With more 5-star hotels than anywhere else in the world, the UK capital leads the way in offering the ultimate luxury city break. But how does it fare when it comes to leading the way in terms of sustainability?

As responsible explorers, we are all looking for ways to reduce our footprint when it comes to travel, therefore, here we round-up the best sustainable hotels in London so your luxury city break vacation can be as green as possible.

Treehouse Hotel - 14-15 Langham Pl, London W1B 2QS

Located in the heart of Marylebone, the Treehouse Hotel brings nature inside offering a quirky and atmospheric place to stay.

The hotel is located over five floors, with its own treehouse rooftop bar and terrace. And, while fun and adventure are definitely on the cards when staying here, sustainability is also high-up on the agenda too.

The hotel has a ban on single-use plastic, sources local, seasonal produce for its stunning Mexican Toca Madera restaurant and also invests in using trustworthy composting and recycling schemes. Guests are encouraged to swap pre-loved books in the coffee shop to support Book Aid and all the bed sheets are made from 100% soft organic cotton.

One Aldwych - 1 Aldwych, London WC2B 4BZ

When it comes to robust eco-friendly philosophies, those at One Aldwych are hard to compete with as a city hotelier.

Winner of the Luxury Eco Certification Standard for its sustainability efforts, this Covent Garden-based hotel pushes the boundaries in terms of both sophistication and eco-friendliness.

From its chlorine-free underground swimming pool to the beehives in its bee-friendly garden, every effort for conservation has been considered. Recycling schemes, biodegradable packaging and water reduction systems are all in place here. Plus, at its Indigo restaurant, all food is gluten and dairy-free, as well as locally sourced from the surrounding areas.

The Beaumont - 8 Balderton St, Brown Hart Gardens, London W1K 6TF

Art Deco glamour in terms of interiors, but 21st century contemporary in terms of sustainability practices; The Beaumont is a pioneer in eco-innovation and  the perfect sustainable stay for your luxury city break in London.

Its old-world aesthetics are charming and luxurious, but beneath the surface you will find cutting-edge carbon-saving initiatives. The hotel recently achieved the gold recycled standard as well as a certificate of excellence in the annual GIFTTS awards and is big on food, water and energy reduction.

Its restaurant – The Colony Grill Room - serves mouth-watering vegan dishes featuring local produce according to the season, and the hotel also works closely with Clean Conscience – a charity which recovers and repurposes unused hotel toiletries to women’s refuges.

The Zetter – St John’s Square, 86-88 Clerkenwell Road, EC1

Sitting pretty in historical Clerkenwell, The Zetter is a boutique townhouse hotel pairing stylish design with eco-friendly mod cons.

The building itself is self-sustaining, with water pumped from a 1500ft borehole, while an energy loop system heats rooms and cools down refrigerators at the same time! All guest rooms are fitted with energy-saving occupancy detection systems which use minimal energy while rooms are vacant, and all walls are decorated using environmentally-friendly paint and sustainably-sourced timber.

Their bath and shower products have been chosen for their environmentally-friendly packaging and formulations, which contain no parabens, phthalates, petrol-derived ingredients, mineral oil, urea, DEA, TEA or propylene glycol.

Plus, the Zetter is a founder member of the Sustainable Restaurant Association which supports restaurants in purchasing from sustainable and local suppliers as well as advising on waste reduction, energy efficiency and fair trade suppliers.

The Ham Yard Hotel - 1 Ham Yard, London W1D 7DT

Nestled into the bustling Soho area of the capital, The Ham Yard Hotel is well-suited for those who want to be close to all the action.
